Susan B. Anthony Museum and House celebrates change-maker

Nestled in a Rochester, New York neighborhood stands a house where history is celebrated every day.

The National Susan B. Anthony Museum and House is located at 17 Madison Street in Rochester. Famed social reformer and women’s rights activist Susan B. Anthony lived in the home from 1866 until her death in 1906.

The Anthony House is open to visitors year-round, including during Women’s History Month in March, to celebrate the change-maker who dedicated a large portion of her life to secure the right to vote for women.

Anthony Takes a Stand

During Anthony’s lifetime, the house was a key location in the suffrage movement. She was arrested by a U.S. Marshal in the home’s front parlor after voting in the 1872 presidential election. Today young girls stand in the very place where that historic moment happened.

The house served as the headquarters of the National American Woman Suffrage Association during Anthony’s tenure as president from 1892-1900. Anthony died in the home at the age of 86 in 1906. It was 14 years after her death when women finally secured the legal guarantee to vote with the ratification of the 19th amendment in 1920.

Visitors to the home are encouraged to be change-makers in their community, just as Anthony was over a century ago.

House to Historic Landmark

The Anthony House was purchased by a group of Rochester women in 1945 and incorporated into the Susan B. Anthony Memorial. In 1966 it was designated a National Historic Landmark. In 1977, the Susan B. Anthony Preservation District was created on the National Register of Historic Places.

Over the decades, visitors have come to the Rochester neighborhood from all over the United States – and the world, including from as far as Japan.

Plans are underway to expand the Susan B. Anthony campus with a new Interpretive Center. The vision is for an Urban Village, featuring Susan B. Anthony Square Park, Let’s Have Tea Sculpture, and The Anthony House – National Historic Landmark.
