What is an International Driving Permit (IDP)?
An International Driving Permit (IDP) is a valid form of identification recognized in 150 countries worldwide. It contains verified driver information, including name and photo, translated into 10 languages.
Applicant qualifications:
- Eighteen years or older
- Hold a valid U.S.A. or Territorial Driver's License
- Two identical recent Passport Type Photos (2'' x 2'') SIGNED ON BACK
Permit Restrictions:
- Valid only in conjunction with a current driver's license. IMPORTANT NOTE: VALID USA OR TERRITORIAL LICENSE MUST BE CARRIED WITH THE PERMIT AT ALL TIMES.
- Not valid for driving in the United States
- Must be effective within 6 months of application date
- Valid for one year from effective date
- Does not give driving privledges
Why does AAA process International Driving Permits?
AAA was selected for this authorization because it is a not-for profit organization with member clubs in all parts of the country, giving wide local coverage for information and service. IDPs and IADPs are issued in accordance with the United Nations Convention on International Road Traffic (1949 Geneva), which encompassed more than 100 countries. In April 1952, the U.S. Department of State officially authorized AAA to issue the International Driving Permit as a service to the general public.
AAA is the only private entity in the United States authorized by the Department of State to issue international drivers permits.

Obtain an IDP at any AAA Branch. Bring a valid U.S. driver license, $20 and two passport-size photos, which are 2 inches x 2 inches, with a white background. We can also take photos for you at a nominal charge.
You may also download the IDP application and mail it along with a photocopy of a valid U.S. driver's license (must copy BOTH sides), $20 (NO CASH. Make check payable to "AAA Western and Central New York") and two passport-size photos, which are 2 inches x 2 inches, with a white background. The omission of any required information will delay processing.
