Protect your home from winter storms
Protect your home from winter storms
There's no place like home! That sentiment is especially true during a winter storm. At home, you’re safe and warm – protected from the wind, snow, and ice. But these elements also present a danger to your home – and that’s why it’s important to make sure your home is winter storm ready.
“In our area, the weight of snow building up on roofs can cause major issues for your home,” said AAA Senior Insurance Advisor Dave Kirst. “We also see increased home damage due to winter windstorms.”
When it comes to prepping your home for winter, the key is to be proactive. Check these items off your to-do list.
Inspect your trees, roof, and gutters:
Ice, wind, and snow can cause weak trees or dead limbs to fall and damage your home. Have a professional examine your roof’s shingles and flashing for any damage and remove debris from gutters so rain, melting ice, and snow can flow freely to prevent water seeping into your home.
Check your heating system:
Have your furnace, boiler, or chimney serviced to make sure they’re in good working condition.
Inspect and insulate pipes:
Inspect pipes for cracks and leaks. Insulate exposed pipes and seal cracks to prevent leaking or bursting.
Identify the main water shutoff valve:
If your pipes freeze, the faster you shut off the water, the better chance you have of preventing them from bursting and causing major damage.
Seal exterior cracks and holes:
Caulk openings and install weather stripping around windows and doors to prevent cold air and moisture from entering the home.
Equip your home with supplies:
Store up nonperishable food items, water, flashlights, blankets, and a first aid kit. Have a snow shovel, ice pick, salt, salt spreader, and gas if you have a snowblower or generator.
Check your home’s insurance policy:
Ensure your policy includes coverage to protect your home from weather-related issues like frozen plumbing, snow, and ice damage.
“The most important thing is to make sure your home policy is for full replacement cost on your structure, and hopefully it has an additional replacement cost endorsement to help with any cost overruns,” noted Kirst.
