Smartphones: They’re almost always in our hand, pocket, or bag. But do you know how to make your smartphone work for you this travel season? AAA breaks down our favorite travel apps that will help make your trip less stressful and more fun!
PackPoint
As your departure date gets closer, it’s easy to get swept up in the excitement of your upcoming vacation and procrastinate on step one: packing. PackPoint makes sure you have exactly what you need to avoid bringing too much stuff or forgetting something at home. The app creates a profile based on your destination, length of stay, reason for the trip, and other key information. It designs a custom packing list for you, allowing you to check off each item as you pack. The app is free, but a premium paid version integrates with other apps.
Waze
Road trips are fun, but you can’t always know what to expect on the road. That’s why we recommend the Waze app — this crowd-sourced navigation system makes it easier for you to circumvent literal and figurative bumps in the road. Even if you know the way, Waze tells you about traffic, construction, police, crashes, hazards, and more in real-time. If traffic is bad on your route, Waze will offer to change your route to save you time.
Glympse
Rather than using voice-to-text, making constant check-in calls, or tasking your passenger with updating your loved ones along your route, try the Glympse app. This is a fast, free, and simple way to share your real-time location using GPS tracking. Send a Glympse to let friends and family know that you are on your way, and they can keep track of where you are as you drive.
FlightView
Missing your plane or having a delayed flight is always a bummer when traveling, so it is important to stay informed about your trip. The FlightView app can help you track flights, manage your itineraries, access arrival and departure boards, and stay up to date about delays and weather forecasts. Whether you are tracking your own vacations or keeping track of your friends and family as they travel, the FlightView app is a great addition to your airline’s smartphone app.
Polarsteps – Travel Tracker
When you are traveling and taking in your new surroundings, it’s not always easy to keep a record of your experiences. Polarsteps does the work for you. Just bring your smartphone along for the trip. The app will create a dynamic visualization of your journey, including photos you took, that you can share with family and friends. Or, you can create a high-quality printed photo album.
Google Translate
Instant translation technology may seem like something from a futuristic sci-fi movie, but it’s here! Google Translate can translate between 133 languages by typing and 119 languages through speech recognition. You can even translate handwriting or text in photos, or use the app to translate a conversation in real time. If you’re visiting an area without Internet service, you can still access text translations for 59 languages.
AAA Mobile app
Of course, we aren’t going to forget our own app! The AAA Mobile app includes many of the AAA services you’ve come to count on in a convenient mobile format. One popular feature is the mobile version of AAA’s TripTik® Travel Planner, which helps you find and get directions to AAA Approved and Diamond Rated hotels, restaurants, and attractions. It also lets you create and share trips between your desktop and mobile devices.
The app also includes hotel and rental car booking, gas price listings, member discounts, and locations for AAA Approved Auto Repair® facilities and AAA branch locations. You can even use the app to request Roadside Assistance!
