AAA Offers Virtual Driver Training Program

Virtual driving courses convenient for many students

Toy cars are used as representation in driver training, with a notepad nearby with a drawing of a four-way stop.

AAA Western and Central New York’s Licensed to Learn (LTL) Program, which includes both classroom and in-car driving instruction for new drivers, is now available virtually! Instead of 10 physical classroom sessions spanning 30 hours, students have the convenience of completing the 30 classroom hours from home via an instructor-led Zoom class. Both virtual and online LTL programs also include an in-car driving instruction component.

The virtual course option is available in the same areas as in-car driving lessons (Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse). AAA’s virtual LTL classes will operate the same way as the previous classroom version, only the instructor and students will meet on Zoom instead of in a physical classroom location. Pricing is the same for in-person and virtual instruction. Students can save $100 when in-car training starts and ends at a AAA branch location — just use the code SAVE100.

In the NEW virtual class, the 30 hours of materials include:

  • 19 hours of virtual driver education instruction — led by instructors via Zoom at set dates and times
  • A 6-hour virtual defensive driving course
  • The 5-hour pre-licensing course — virtually

Also included in BOTH the virtual and in-person LTL Programs:

  • 10 one-on-one driving lessons with a state-licensed AAA driving instructor
  • Certificate for point and insurance reduction
  • FREE 1-year AAA Basic® Membership
  • 5-hour pre-licensing course (MV-278) certificate

When students register for either the virtual or online class, they will need to pick a location and time. However, they will not need to go to that location on that date, because the location simply represents what region they are in. For the online class, the time and date is the approximate date you will receive your class log in information. The virtual class will take place on set days and times.

Teenage LTL drivers aged 16-17 have a 62% lower accident rate in NYS. All AAA Driver Training instructors are New York State DMV-certified and receive 33% more training than is mandated to assure the quality and effectiveness of instruction.
