Hazardous storms and inclement weather are factors in more than half a million crashes and more than 2,000 road deaths every winter, according to research from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. AAA urges drivers to slow down, be cautious and prepare their vehicles for cold days. Remember not to let the gas in your vehicle go below a half-tank in the winter!

About 46 percent of crashes involving bad weather take place in the winter, making this the worst time of year for driving. So, heeding this advice can go a long way.

The top three winter driving tips include slowing down during bad weather, increasing the space between yourself and other vehicles, and braking before turning.

In an emergency

Should you find yourself in an emergency situation, stay with your car, remain calm and call 911. If you are stranded in your car, remain there unless you need to clear your tailpipe of snow to ensure proper ventilation. Then, return to the vehicle and keep your window cracked open a bit until help arrives.

AAA call volume across Western and Central New York usually picks up on cold mornings, especially on Mondays, as motorists prepare to head back to work. To avoid long hold times during high call volume, members can request road service via the free AAA mobile app or at AAA.com.
