Historic Squares and Parks

Georgia colony founder James Oglethorpe laid out the historic plan of Savannah around 24 squares, of which 22 remain today. Johnson Square was the first, built in 1733 and named for Robert Johnson, the royal governor of South Carolina when Georgia was founded. The squares contain Spanish moss-draped trees, monuments and art, and they are often surrounded by historic buildings. The 30-acre Forsyth Park is the largest within the historic district, and it’s known for its picturesque 1858 cast-iron fountain.

Tybee Island 802

Twenty miles from Savannah’s historic district is Tybee Island, a beachfront community with Georgia’s tallest and oldest lighthouse. The Tybee Lighthouse and Museum was built in 1736, and it has 178 steps to the top. The Tybee Pier and Pavilion is located on South Beach, and the surrounding neighborhood is filled with restaurants, bars, shops and other attractions.

Olde Pink House

The Olde Pink House is located within Savannah’s historic district bordering Reynolds Square. It’s a National Landmark mansion built in 1771. Here, visitors will find Southern comfort food such as fried green tomatoes and low-country crab in addition to steaks and chops. It’s open for lunch as well as for candlelit dinners.

The Pirates’ House

Located one block from the Savannah River, the Pirates’ House was first established as an inn and tavern for visiting sailors in 1753. Author Robert Louis Stevenson mentions Savannah’s Pirates’ House in his classic novel “Treasure Island,” and the restaurant celebrates the theme. Specializing in Southern cuisine and seafood, the Pirates’ House is a great option for families.
