Life changes in 2023? Update your insurance
In the coming year, will you be getting married? Having a baby? Retiring? Congratulations! Take a deep breath, and then contact your insurance agent, because you're going to need to change a few things.
"Any time you have a major life change, your insurance needs are going to change as well, whether it's having a baby or retiring from a job," said Stacey McConnell, senior director of member experience insurance sales for AAA Western and Central New York.
Getting Married?
"You and your new spouse may be able to save money on your car insurance by merging your policies into one," McConnell said. Combining policies - auto and home, as well as multi-car policies - is just one way to save money on your insurance. And don't forget: Ask your agent if you should add a rider to your home insurance policy to protect your new engagement ring.
A New Baby?
When you have a baby, your life insurance needs to cover both parents' income. "Even if only one parent is working, it's advisable to get life insurance for both parents," McConnell said. "In the event of the death of a spouse who stays at home to provide childcare, future daycare expenses could be offset by the proceeds from a life insurance policy."
Retiring?
Without a daily commute, now is a good time to take another look at your car insurance coverage. Be sure to review your life insurance coverage, too - you want to make sure that your loved ones are taken care of when you die.
Moving?
If you move out of your parents’ home, talk to your agent if your car is insured on your parents’ policy. While staying on their policy might save you money, it may not be allowed. Moving into a rental? Consider a renters insurance policy.
"Your landlord’s policy likely only covers the building and the land—not your personal property inside," McConnell said.
And if you're buying a home, start shopping for home insurance once your new home has been appraised. While homeowners insurance isn’t required by law, every mortgage lender requires it.
