Find a mechanic who repairs your brand of car

This is especially important if you have a major issue with your car. The mechanic who services your car will have the latest model equipment on hand, and will be familiar with all the quirks and details associated with your type of vehicle.

Ask the mechanic if he will offer a warranty for his work

Do this before you hand over the keys to your car. Warranties vary from shop to shop, get the warranty in writing.

Make sure the mechanic is certified

Ask if the mechanic is certified by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence, or ASE. This will serve as proof of his skills, knowledge, and automotive expertise.

Check for complaints

Research the mechanic via the Better Business Bureau. As with any retailer, you want to make sure there are no major red flags with them. It's not uncommon to see some complaints, but what matters is how those situations were resolved.
