A Vacation Destination for Families and Couples Alike

With its inviting beaches and world-class golf courses, Hilton Head Island in South Carolina has been a go-to East Coast vacation spot for generations.

Whether you’re in search of American history, looking to explore the island’s 60 miles of trails, or ready to hit the links, there’s no shortage of activity taking place in Hilton Head.

The question is, is Hilton Head the right place for a family vacation? And how does it stack up as a couple’s destination?

Two of AAA’s marketing team members, Charlie Fashana, director of marketing, and Matt McCormick, insurance and automotive marketing specialist, share their perspectives on Hilton Head. Charlie recently returned from a family road trip to the island, while Matt has enjoyed flying there with his wife for a couple’s getaway.

GETTING TO HILTON HEAD

Family Road Trip

“It’s a long drive but very manageable. If you grab your Digital TripTik, you’ll see that you can split the drive up into four 3 1/2 hour segments from Buffalo, with stops in Pittsburgh and Beckley, WV. Plan for a little traffic at the tail end as you approach Charlotte, NC, but also plan for a great southern barbecue lunch. From there you’re in the home stretch down I-77 and I-95 to get you to Hilton Head.” –Charlie

Flying to the Island

“Having gone to Hilton Head Island for years, I’ve flown to Savannah/Hilton Head International, Charleston, and Jacksonville. Most have direct flights from Buffalo, and if you are renting a car, the drive from each airport to Hilton Head Island is not bad.” –Matt

THE HILTON HEAD VIBE

With the Kids

“This is a slow-paced southern island that is all about relaxation. Youʼll never get a side-eye when you walk into a restaurant or store with a troupe of kids in tow. Thereʼs no shortage of tourist spots, but also plenty of scenic nature and outdoor activities. And of course, you have the Atlantic Ocean to enjoy together.” – Charlie

With Your Date

“There’s just enough nightlife on the island, without going over the top. There are two breweries, a distillery, a winery, and great restaurants. We really enjoyed the laid-back atmosphere. There’s enough to do to keep you busy, but you can just hang out at the beach, too. You can also do something active, like tennis, kayaking, golf, biking, and zip-lining.” – Matt

THE PERFECT DAY OUT

With Family

“Start the day early with a great breakfast. There are so many choices on the island. Then, rent some bikes and take them to the beach. After lunch, take the kids for a round of miniature golf. Pirate Adventure is awesome. Follow up with some ice cream. We went to Kilwins Hilton Head Shelter Cove. Get a little rest, then head down to the iconic Sea Pines Resort area in Harbour Town.

Get an outdoor dinner, do some shopping, take a stair climb to the top of the Harbour Town Light House, or just people-watch. If you plan properly, you can cap the night off with one of Greg Russellʼs famous outdoor acoustic concerts, where he performs for the kids – and the parents – at the same time.” – Charlie

For Couples

“I would start off with breakfast at Stacks Pancake House or Duck Donuts. Follow that up with a nice walk on the beach, and then grab a drink at Coco’s on the Beach or Sea Salts Beverage Company. Take a swim in the pool or ocean, and then take in happy hour at Hilton Head Brewery. Close the night with dinner at Fishcamp on Broad Creek or Skull Creek Boathouse.” – Matt
