Vehicles that go past 100,000 miles are generally considered "high mileage", but that doesn't even come close to the mileage that some drivers have been able to add up in just one vehicle.

AAA has put together a list of some of the highest mileage vehicles to ever hit the road. Most of these vehicles were carefully driven and well maintained. If you're looking for an auto shop to help maintain your car that you can trust, use AAA's Approved Auto Repair Locator.

CAR

1966 Volvo P1800 - 3,000,000 miles

Irv Gordon of East Patchogue, New York set the world record for most miles on a personal car by racking up over 3.4 million miles in his 1966 Volvo 1800S. Gordon, who said he bought the Volvo in 1966 for $4,150, estimated that he drove over 100,000 miles per year visiting car shows as far away as Vancouver, Canada.

Gordon told Popular Mechanics that he changed his oil every 3,000-3,500 miles and changed the transmission fluid every 25,000 miles. Gordon was probably a very gentle driver. The original clutch to the manual transmission usually lasts around 50,000 miles, Gordon was able to make his last 450,000!

According to Guinness World Records, the Volvo's 3.4 million miles is enough to circumnavigate the Earth about 120 times.

TRUCK

1991 Chevy Silverado 1500 - 1.29 Million Miles

Frank Oresnik broke 1.29 million miles in his 1991 Chevy C1500 pickup, which he bought used in 1996 with 41,000 miles on the odometer, according to Motorbiscuit.com. He put his miles in delivering steak and seafood from Chicago to Wisconsin every day. Oresnik claims that rust-proofing the undercarriage and continuous care helped push his truck past 1 million miles.

"My driving style can best be described as 'easy on the gas, easy off the gas, easy on the brakes' and certainly some good luck while driving on the interstates all those miles," Oresnik told Brake and Frontend Magazine. "But they don't explain the extraordinarily scarce evidence of any wear in my engine."

VAN

1997 Ford E-250 - 1.3 Million Miles

According to his website MillionMileVan.com, Doug Schell's 1997 Ford E-250 cargo van hit nearly 1.3 million miles after years of delivering cargo across North America.

Schell told the Toledo Sun that he drove the van between 80,000 and 100,000 miles a year, and that he changed the van's oil every 10,000 miles. Schell had to finally retire the trusty van in 2011.

TAXI

1956 Ford Fleetwood - 1 Million Miles

Taxis go through a lot of wear and tear, but Bob Bender, operator of the 'R.L. Bender Deluxe Cab' service in Wisconsin, was able to get his 1956 Cadillac Fleetwood "Nellie" past 1 million miles by 1982. Bender drove the taxi up to 250 miles a day running passengers from the Dane County Airport to downtown Madison.

Like other long-distance drivers, Bender was serious about maintenance.

"If some little thing goes wrong, I fix it right away. If a screw's loose, I tighten it up," he said in a 1982 article archived by UPI.com

MOTORCYCLE

1991 Harley-Davidson FXRT - 1 Million Miles

Dave Zien, a former senator from Wisconsin, put over 1 million miles on his 1991 Harley-Davidson FXRT.

"The million mile motorcycle man. The only person to have put a million miles on one motorcycle with the documentation to prove it. It not like some of these guys at a tavern on Saturday morning claiming they got a million miles," Zien told FOX 6 in 2013.

Zien's Harley was retired and put on display at the Motorcycle Hall of Fame in Sturgis, South Dakota.
