What to do

Magnolia Plantation and Gardens
After a “must-do” walking tour of historic downtown Charleston, learn even more by visiting this plantation, only 25 minutes from downtown. Founded in 1676, you can step back in time and tour the Drayton family plantation house, take a train or boat ride, and enjoy spectacular gardens. 
 
Folly Beach 
If you want to take a break from it all and hit the beach, Folly Beach is just a short ride (20 minutes) from downtown. You’ll find an expansive beach with shopping and several restaurants with dog-friendly patios like Rita’s (see ‘Where to eat’ later in this blog). Consider visiting the Morris Island Lighthouse at the Lighthouse Inlet Heritage Preserve. It’s a pleasant walk awarded with beautiful ocean views as you approach the lighthouse.

Charleston Waterfront Park
This is where you’ll find the photogenic Pineapple Fountain, which is a definite Instagram moment for couples, pets, and families. It opened in 1990, in the spring, following Hurricane Hugo. Pineapple motifs are common in Charleston and represent hospitality. Smile for the camera!

Rainbow Row
Just as photogenic, and a popular spot for wedding and engagement photos, is Charleston’s colorful Rainbow Row – a series of 13 brightly-colored row houses along the city’s waterfront. Visit and learn the history behind the rainbow!

King Street Shopping
Looking to shop ‘til you drop? 300-year-old King Street is the place to do it. U.S. News and World Report named it one of the country's "Top 10 Shopping Streets." The streetscape is just as beautiful as the items for sale, and you’ll find art galleries and more as you explore. Hall’s Chophouse (AAA Four Diamond)
For an award-winning dinner, the famed Hall’s Chophouse, is a AAA Four Diamond establishment that has held its title since 2010. Don’t let the name chophouse fool you – there are plenty of delectable options for everyone and each incredible dish comes with impeccable service. 

Rita’s Seaside Grille (Folly Beach)
If you’re traveling with your pet, head over to Rita’s, where you can dine on the patio with your pooch – the servers will even bring doggie water bowls to the table. Dog owners won’t be disappointed with the expansive menu!

The Watch: Rooftop Kitchen & Spirits
You’ll be treated to incredible views from The Watch, which is the rooftop lounge at The Restoration, a hotel near King Street. A toast to your trip is perfectly fitting in this sleek space that gives you a birds-eye view of Charleston. Enjoy a hand-crafted cocktail with a small plate as you take it all in.

Page’s Okra Grill
About six miles outside Charleston, you’ll find Page’s, which is a staple with locals for its delicious food and homemade desserts. Plus, Page’s touts itself as the best value in Charleston. Try the house specialty, shrimp and grits, but the secret is out – the dish has been featured on the Travel Channel and in Southern Living Magazine.

5Church Charleston
We told you that Charleston was the Holy City, so why not dine in a former church converted to a popular restaurant serving American fare? Upon entering, the biggest decision will be rating what’s best: the food, the drinks, or the atmosphere! The owners made the news recently with a “tip the kitchen” program, so if the food is outstanding, you’ll have an easy way to let the chef know.

John Rutledge House Inn (AAA Four Diamond)
John Rutledge was a South Carolina delegate who signed the Constitution and built this inn as his home in 1763 with beautiful plasterwork and Italian fireplaces. The main house features large rooms with period décor and ornate woodwork, while adjacent carriage houses offer romance and privacy. The site is unique as it is the only home of a signer of the Constitution that’s also a living historic landmark and a bed and breakfast.
