Today’s national average price for a gallon of gasoline is $2.53, which is down five cents from one week ago. One year ago, the price was $2.28. The New York State average is $2.73, down three cents from last week. A year ago, the NYS average was $2.48.

AAA Western and Central New York (AAA WCNY) reports the following averages:

  • Batavia - $2.66 (down 2 cents in past week)
  • Buffalo - $2.68 (down 1 cent in past week)
  • Ithaca - $2.70 (down 3 cents in past week)
  • Rochester - $2.68 (down 2 cents in past week)
  • Rome - $2.74 (down 2 cents in past week)
  • Syracuse - $2.68 (down 3 cents in past week)
  • Watertown - $2.77 (down 1 cent in past week)

Gas prices have decreased and the downturn looks to be as a result of quicker refinery maintenance turnarounds and a build in U.S. crude oil inventories and production. Increased U.S. production, coupled with increases in the U.S. oil rig count, puts a spotlight on OPEC’s restrained production agreement aimed at rebalancing the global oil supply. Market watchers will closely monitor to see how much a surge in U.S. production eats into OPEC’s efforts to rebalance the market and the impact it has on crude oil prices. Gas prices are dipping slightly thanks to rising inventories of gasoline along the East Coast territory and an increase in crude oil supplies, in addition to the drop in oil prices last week.

However, expect to see spring gasoline prices increase. Some analysts are predicting an increase of 20-25 cents per gallon. Global demand increasing and prices will increase as refineries switch over to more expensive summer blend fuel.
