3 Tips for Holiday Travel

The holiday season is one of the busiest times of the year to travel in the U.S., so if you are thinking of traveling soon, it's important to keep these tips in mind.

  1. Don't pre-wrap gifts: If you are traveling by air during the Christmas holiday and plan on exchanging gifts on your vacation, don’t wrap the presents before traveling. TSA will likely unwrap the gifts as you go through security. Packing gifts in your luggage often forces you to check bags at the airport and also takes up valuable suitcase space. Skip the hassle altogether and ship Christmas presents ahead of time so they’ll be at your destination when you arrive. Don’t forget to bring an extra (empty) bag to bring back gifts you receive or pick up some packing cubes from the AAA Travel Store to save room in your suitcase.

  2. Stick to a carry-on bag: The amount of lost luggage tends to increase over the holidays, so if you decide to have your presents shipped to your destination then you can save time and money at the airport by packing everything in one carry-on bag. If you can manage with a small, well-organized carry-on, you can skip the baggage check (and, in most cases, fees) altogether.

  3. Don’t drive yourself to the airport: Airport parking prices take a steep hike around the holidays because of the increase in demand. See if a friend can drive you to the airport, call a cab or look into public transportation options. Also, be sure to arrive extra early for your flight to allow plenty of time to get through security due to the long lines from holiday crowds.
