If you’re driving near New York City for the holiday, here are some tools and advice that may help you while the region continues to recover from Superstorm Sandy.

Fuel rationing

Gasoline rationing ended in New Jersey and Long Island. The odd-even gas rationing rules will continue in New York City through Friday, Nov. 23. Read more

Finding open gas stations

For the most current information, we recommend that you contact a gas station directly. We encourage you to get a TripTik online and download the free AAA Mobile app to find contact information for gas stations in the area so you may contact them directly.

Please note: These tools will NOT indicate whether a station is open or not. It will, however, in many cases, give you the station's contact information.

An important note about rental cars

If you were planning to rent a car during your Thanksgiving visit to New York City, you will most likely need to come up with an alternate transportation plan. With thousands of cars destroyed during the superstorm, many of the most prominent names in the car rental industry are simply out of inventory. A AAA New York representative said that it may be as long as mid-December until rental cars are readily available again. Learn more

What’s open in New York City?

In Sandy’s aftermath, New York City has begun the process of assessment, recovery and restoration. We have found a good resource for information about the current status of various museums, cultural institutions, attractions and Broadway and Off-Broadway performances. Please use common sense and call ahead to make sure that the sites you wish to visit are open before heading out. Learn more
